Meet We are STEM!

We are STEM is a student organization promoting gender diversity and equality at the Faculty of Science of the UvA.

In the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) there is a massive gender imbalance. Women and non-binary people are underrepresented in the academic world. Further up the academic ladder, this demographic becomes even less diverse. This is partly caused by prejudiced ideas of what a scientist or engineer should look like and by the (incorrect) idea that your gender influences your intellect.

We are STEM believes that researchers in STEM have a responsibility towards society. To be able to serve our society as well as possible, it is important to consider the experience of all people in it. The goal of We are STEM is to make STEM studies more gender diverse and create a safe environment where people can develop and use their skills, regardless of their gender. We are STEM invites people of all genders to join them on their mission and show the world that STEM studies are for everyone.
