All people have a right to the protection of their personal data. In fact, this is a fundamental right. The Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (AP), the Dutch data protection authority, is the independent regulator in the Netherlands that stands up for this right. A much encompassing task, especially with the abundance of Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence applications nowadays. Applications that use lots and lots of data, often personal.

What kind of work does this involve? Does it ever get technical? And if it does, how so? This talk addresses the work of the Dutch DPA and the role of the technologists there. It includes some cases as well, so you’ll get some feeling on how to reason about do’s and dont’s when it comes to building systems that process personal data.

Victor Klos is senior inspector/technologist and has a technical background. Before he joined the Dutch Data Protection Authority he used to be involved in R&D, via telecom and multimedia to responsible data science and privacy preserving analytics. At the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, he enjoys the new perspective that is created when legal and technical experts collaborate. Most of his time he spends on issues regarding anonimity of data and the responsible application of machine learning. If you want to reach him you can do so by e-mail at v.klos@autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl or through linkedin.com/in/victorklos.
